Boys' State - Ben Meyers

January 19, 2010

Ben Meyers was the guest speaker of the day, introduced by Kyle Keen. Ben talked about his selection to attend Boys' State, an annual event in Tallahassee initially started by the American Legion as a way to get young people involved in government.

Each year several hundred high school juniors are selected by school faculties all over the country, each state having its own program. These young men are then brought before the American Legion post in their area to present themselves for selection to attend this prestigious event. Every year, young men make the trek to the state capitol to participate in a hands on experience that teaches them how to run government. They are housed in a dormitory setting at Florida State University and by the end of their week, they have participated in running campaigns and elections, served in various capacities such as mayors, legislators and governor.

Ben values his experience in the Boys' State program and now volunteers to promote the program.
