Wildlife Biology - Ricky Lackey

December 08, 2009

The guest speaker of the day was Ricky Lackey. Ricky is a wildlife biologist working with the Florida Wildlife Commission. Hunters and conservationists alike had their interest captured while the speaker discussed the reasons for conservation and proper management of deer herds in North Florida. The entire Powerpoint presentation is available for those who would like to know more about management of deer herds as well as turkey populations.

Ricky also discussed the various programs administered by the state to assist property owners with conservation, better land use techniques and how to attract and keep wildlife in the area. Also discussed were the different cost share programs administered by the state through the USDA. The minimum tract size for these programs is limited to 20 acres, but the state will provide assistance in any of their programs regardless of the parcel size.

Ricky serves the entire North Central Florida area from Madison County to the East coast, and from the state line to just South of Alachua county. For more information, about the programs offered by FWC, you can visit their website.
