Read Across America

Every year, the National Education Association sponsors a nationwide event. The event is tied to the birthday of world renowned author Theodor Seuss Geisel, more commonly recognized as Dr. Seuss. Each year on or about March 2, thousands of schools, libraries and community organizations band together to promote basic reading skills and encourage young boys and girls to become better readers.Bob McManus as

This year Kiwanis Club of Lake City is proud to have partnered with local schools to provide in class reading to eager students. When approached with the opportunity to participate, Kiwanis Club of Lake City felt it was the next logical step, considering the number of years we have participated in reading to kindergarden students. The children were excited to have our volunteers enter the classroom and read aloud some of the books written by Dr. Suess. In the spirit of the day, much to the amusement of the students, our own Bob McManus donned the trademark headpiece made popular by "The Cat in the Hat".

As the event drew to a close, the readers from Kiwanis Club of Lake City posed for a proud moment as the 2009 Class of Suessdom. We congratulate and thank all the volunteers that made Read Across America 2009 a resounding success and look forward to the opportunity to continue the tradition in the future.
