Early in 2007, Kiwanis Club members were given the opportunity to create a lasting legacy to the people of Columbia County in the way of a park. Kiwanis Club of Lake City already had some experience with building parks some years earlier with Kiwanis Park.
When the project was first pitched to the Club, we mulled about the idea and cost of the project and considered how we would be able to pull off such a feat. After some serious discussions, the club decided unanimously to support the idea and the park at Southside Sports Complex was born. A committee set out to find the proper equipment and after a few weeks we had a game plan put in place.
With the help of several community sponsors, club members and local government agencies, Kiwanis Club of Lake City pulled out all the stops and hit the ground running. Within a few months the site was prepared, playground equpiment was installed and the facility was ready for use in mid 2008.
Sadly, Christmas Eve 2007 Kiwanis Club of Lake City lost a stalwart member. Sam Vann had long been a pillar in the community and a tireless Kiwanian. He had served on the Board of Directors and was a Past President. Early in 2008, in memorium, Kiwanis Club of Lake City chose to name this newest addition to the community after one of our own, thus Sam Vann Park was born.
