Kiwanis was brought to Lake City, Florida on December 11, 1923 by a group of 42 local businessmen. At that time Kiwanis was still predominantly a business fraternity, but the focus soon changed and was directed agressively at promoting programs to benefit children.
In the 86 years Kiwanis has been in Lake City, we have actively engaged the community and we regularly provide assistance to children and families in Lake City and Columbia County.
Kiwanis originally met at the Blanche Hotel in downtown Lake City and later moved to the Woman's Club on Lake Isabelle, which is where Kiwanis meets today.
Kiwanis in Lake City has grown to 100 members and is actively seeking others that hold the same community spirit and have a desire to help children across the area. Some things we have been involved in over recent years are:
- Kiwanis Park adjacent to First Federal on Hwy 90 West
- Sam Vann Park at Southside Sports Complex
- Refurbished softball field at Lake City Middle School
- Concession and Restroom facility (nearing completion) at Southside Sports Complex
- Salvation Army bell ringing
- Annual Kiwanis Kids Day at the Columbia County Fair
- Altrusa volunteering
- Breast Cancer Awareness volunteering
There are many more opportunities to become involved in the Kiwanis program and we welcome new members to join us in promoting worthwhile projects that have a deep and lasting positive influence on children across Lake City and Columbia County.
